Why you should submit an abstract to the MINEXCHANGE SME Annual Conference & Expo

Each year, as summer approaches, SME opens the door for professionals across the mining industry to contribute to one of the most influential technical gatherings in the world: the MINEXCHANGE SME Annual Conference & Expo. If you have never submitted an abstract — or if you have thought your idea might not be “big enough” — this is the year to change that. MINEXCHANGE is widely recognized as the foremost technical mining conference globally. More papers are presented at SME than at nearly all other major mining conferences combined. Your idea is more valuable than you think One of the most common misconceptions is that a conference submission must be a fully composed technical paper. In reality, SME welcomes a wide range of presentation formats — including PowerPoint-based presentations without a formal written paper. What matters most is that your topic is new, interesting or offers a unique perspective. A project you consider routine or narrowly focused may, in fact, be exactly the insight someone else has been searching for. Every year, attendees find tremendous value in presentations that highlight niche innovations, practical problem solving and real-world case studies. The only real limitation? Avoid turning your presentation into a sales pitch. The SME audience is there to learn, not to sit through a commercial. How the submission process works The steps are simple: In June, SME opens its Abstract Central portal. By early August, you submit your title and short description — just a brief abstract describing what you want to present. You may browse available technical sessions to find the best fit, or reach out to session chairs if you know someone involved. In late September, SME notifies you whether your abstract has been accepted. If your work is selected and you want to prepare a formal paper, you will submit a preprint shortly after acceptance. These preprints are shared with conference attendees and published in the OneMine database, providing long-term visibility for your contribution. Presenting at SME is not just a one-time event; it becomes part of your professional legacy. Many authors find papers they wrote decades ago still circulating in the OneMine library. It is a small slice of immortality — and a great boost to any resume. All presentations and abstracts must be delivered in English, and authors are required to attend the annual conference in February to present their work. Why your voice matters Technical sessions are at the heart of the annual conference.
