New Gold resumes operations at New Afton Mine following tailings facility inspection
New Gold Inc. announced that it resumed operations at its New Afton gold and copper project on Aug. 11. On Aug. 10, the company reported that it had halted underground mining activities at its New Afton gold and copper mine in Kamloops, British Columbia following an inspection of the tailings storage facility observed geotechnical variances that require further review by the Engineer of Record (EOR).
The inspection was completed on Aug. 9.
“Out of an abundance of caution, the company has elected to suspend underground mining activities allowing its EOR appropriate time to review the findings,” New Gold said in a statement.
Milling operations continue unaffected and are utilizing the existing surface stockpile. In-pit tailings deposition is ongoing as planned. New Gold has alerted and is working with the relevant regulatory authorities to address the situation, and will issue further updates as appropriate.
“Our priority remains the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees, contractors and communities,” the company said in a statement.
