Turning data into decisions: Strengthening ADTI outcomes through better data foundations

The Acid Drainage Technology Initiative (ADTI) continues to play a critical role in advancing our understanding of acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD) and improving closure outcomes across the mining industry. From geochemical characterization to predictive modeling and long-term monitoring, mine site geochemical characterization is grounded in rigorous science and collaborative knowledge sharing. However, as the industry continues to evolve, an increasingly important question is emerging: not just what data we collect, but how we manage, validate and use that data over time. The growing challenge of data complexity Modern AMD and environmental programs generate vast and diverse data sets. Water quality samples, kinetic test results, field measurements and sensor data are often collected across multiple locations by different teams using a variety of formats. Over the life of a mine, these data sets may span decades, involving numerous consultants, laboratories, measurement methods and regulatory frameworks. It is not uncommon for data to be lost or misplaced when the project transitions from baseline studies to construction and operation, there are changes in consultants or changes in ownership. While the technical tools for modeling and prediction have advanced significantly, the underlying data are often fragmented — spread across spreadsheets, reports and legacy systems held by both the mining company and numerous consultants. This fragmentation introduces risk and inefficiencies: inconsistent formats, gaps in data provenance, and difficulties in reproducing results or defending decisions. This risk is particularly true for the data from baseline studies, which are frequently generated by a team of consultants before the mine hires staff to assume responsibility for the monitoring programs. Baseline data are one of the most critical data sets a mine will generate, as they serve as evidence of the pre-development conditions and basis for closure goals. For geochemists, this challenge is not theoretical. It impacts the reliability of geochemical models, the confidence in closure predictions and ultimately, the ability to demonstrate long-term environmental performance. From data collection to data confidence One of the key shifts occurring across the industry is a move toward treating environmental data as a long-term asset rather than a short-term deliverable. This requires a more structured approach to how data are stored, validated and maintained. Centralized environmental data management systems (EDMS) are increasingly being used to bring together environmental data sets into a single, governed framework. These systems support and enable consistent data formats, automated validation checks and traceability back to original sources. Over time, EDMS create a more reliable foundation for analysis — ensuring that trends observed today can be confidently compared to conditions years or even decades in the future. For AMD-related work, this reliability is particularly important. Small variations in pH, redox conditions or metal concentrations can significantly influence model outputs. Ensuring that such data are accurate, consistent and comparable across time and space is essential for reliable interpretation, impact assessment and closure planning. Supporting modeling, validation and collaboration As ADTI initiatives continue to emphasize model development and validation, the importance of complete, representative and accessible data becomes even more pronounced. Well-managed data allows practitioners to confidently develop and validate predictive models; compare results across sites, time and conditions; integrate new data streams, including real-time monitoring; and share information more effectively among regulators, consultants, academics and operators to ensure consistent communication to stakeholders. Equally important is the ability to maintain continuity and data quality across project phases. From active operations through closure and into post-closure monitoring, data must remain accessible and understandable to future teams who may not have been involved in its original collection. Looking ahead ADTI has long championed the importance of science-based decision-making. As data sets grow in size, importance and complexity, the next step is ensuring that the data underpinning that science are equally robust. By strengthening the way environmental data is managed and governed, industry can reduce uncertainty, improve transparency and reinforce defensible closure outcomes. In this sense, better data management and governance is not a separate discipline but a foundational element of the same goal ADTI has always pursued: advancing responsible and sustainable mine water management.
