Prepare for the P.E. exam with SME’s five-day review course in September
The Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam will take place on Oct. 8, 2025. The computer-based exam tests for a minimum level of competency in a particular engineering discipline including mining and mineral processing. The single-day testing is offered just one-time a year. To help you prepare, SME will offer a review course Sept. 6-10 at SME headquarters in Englewood, CO. The five-day review course, taught by professors from Pennsylvania State University, Michigan Technological University, West Virginia University and Colorado School of Mines, provides an overview that reviews the subject matter of the PE exam. It is not an introduction to any of the topics and instructors do not know the contents of the exam nor do they submit problems for the actual exam.
The exam is designed for engineers with a minimum of four years of post-college work experience. The P.E. Registration is one way to demonstrate the credibility of an engineer’s work and is the only legal way for an engineer to offer mining/mineral engineering services to the general public.
Course in review
The SME PE Review Course is a five-day course covering each of the examination subject topics, terminology, concepts and it also provides a multitude of information and sources for executing the exam.
