MiS merit badge pamphlet available

Scouting America’s merit badge program has always evolved to meet the needs of Scouts at the time. You will no longer find badges for Blacksmithing, Nut Culture and Pigeon Raising, but there are merit badges for Energy, Digital Technology, Composite Materials and, of course, Mining in Society (MiS). Now the merit badge program’s latest evolution is here: All merit badge pamphlets are available as free PDFs on the official Scouting America Merit Badge Hub, right alongside the requirements for each badge. This includes the MiS pamphlet, which at 90-plus pages is more like a small textbook. “Making every merit badge pamphlet freely available online meets Scouts where they already learn and share information,” said Scouts BSA national program chair Angelique Minett. “By removing cost and access barriers, we’re empowering more young people to dive into new skills the moment curiosity strikes.” This also makes it easier for SME members to become merit badge counselors for MiS and a range of other badge topics in which they have some professional expertise, including energy, chemistry, geology, safety and more. A merit badge counselor serves as both a teacher and a mentor as Scouts work on a merit badge. The counselor’s responsibilities include the following: Assist Scouts as they plan the assigned projects and activities to meet a badge’s requirements. Coach them through interviews and demonstrations on how to complete the various requirements. Sign off with their approval, once they are satisfied the Scout has individually and personally completed the requirements exactly as written. Reviewing the badge requirements and the merit badge pamphlet will help you understand what is being asked of Scouts.
