First, a landmark partnership between MP Materials and Apple is setting a new benchmark for U.S. rare earth magnet production. Apple has committed a $500 million investment into MP Materials to supply rare earth magnets made entirely from recycled materials, all manufactured domestically. These magnets, critical to devices like iPhones and MacBooks, will come from MP’s Fort Worth, Texas facility, with recycled feedstock sourced from its Mountain Pass site in California. This agreement not only strengthens Apple’s U.S. manufacturing presence but also signals a strategic shift to reduce reliance on Chinese supply chains after Beijing halted rare earth exports earlier this year. The move builds on a multibillion-dollar deal MP recently inked with the U.S. Department of Defense to bolster domestic magnet production, marking significant momentum in America’s rare earth independence. 

Next, Freeport-McMoRan stands to benefit handsomely from President Trump’s newly announced 50 percent tariff on imported copper. As America’s largest copper producer, controlling 60 percent of domestic output, Freeport could see a $1.6 billion annual profit boost if the tariff takes effect this August. The policy is designed to spur U.S. self-sufficiency in copper, but with U.S. mines taking an average of nearly 30 years to develop, Freeport’s established operations give it a clear advantage over competitors. The company plans to further expand output by leaching copper from old waste rock, potentially adding 800 million pounds annually by 2027. Meanwhile, rivals like Rio Tinto and BHP face project delays, community opposition, and permitting hurdles. 

Finally, in mining safety news, Sandvik and Glencore are expanding their partnership to deploy Newtrax collision-avoidance technology across Glencore’s global underground operations. This OEM-agnostic system, currently being implemented at the Kamoto Copper Company in the DRC and Raglan nickel mine in Canada, offers advanced proximity detection and automated collision avoidance tailored for mixed equipment fleets. The integration reflects Glencore’s commitment to achieving zero harm across its sites while enhancing productivity and operational insights through the Newtrax Mining Data Platform. With safety as a strategic priority, both companies aim to set new industry standards, ensuring not just smarter, but safer mining in increasingly complex underground environments.
