ITRC releases reuse of solid mining waste guidance and associated training course

The Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council (ITRC) released a new guidance and a training course on the Reuse of Solid Mining Waste (https://itrcweb.org/resource/reuse-of-solid-mining-waste) in February. ITRC is a coalition of U.S. state regulators, industry experts, citizen stakeholders, academia and U.S. federal partners that work together to identify and reduce barriers to innovative environmental technologies and approaches. It provides technical guidance, training and events on various environmental topics. This is accomplished through project teams and ITRC members who bring their diverse experience, knowledge and solutions to a common forum. The ITRC project team that produced the Reuse of Solid Mine Waste guidance and training course includes regulators from various states, industry professionals and academics who pooled their expertise to map the complex American regulatory and technology landscape practitioners must navigate to develop, sanction or understand a mine waste reutilization project. Solid mining waste represents a significant quantity of waste material in the United States and around the world. It has a range of physical and chemical characteristics that make it both potentially valuable and potentially hazardous to human health and the environment. The different types of mining sites and potential wastes for reuse present a significant challenge but also an opportunity for innovation. The overall purpose of the Reuse of Solid Mining Waste guidance is to provide an understanding of the issues and opportunities within the field of solid mining waste reuse for interested parties, their consultants and other stakeholders, including those individuals who are looking for further guidance during the development and review of a site-specific solid mining waste reuse plan. The guidance and its associated training course cover: Introduction to mining wastes. Considerations for reusing mining waste: Waste characterization, economic and market considerations, life cycle and risk assessment, regulatory considerations and stakeholder considerations. Potential applications for the reuse of solid mining waste: Examples of construction, environmental and industrial reuses. Review of technologies used in mineral beneficiation and processing. Additionally, the guidance includes several case studies illustrating a range of current mining waste reuse scenarios. The first training webinar took place on Feb. 13, 2025, and will be offered two more times later in 2025. You can register for this training at https://cluin.org/conf/itrc/MiningWaste. There is no cost to attend this training. Materials and supporting information can be found on the ITRC website, and participants are encouraged to view the associated ITRC Reuse of Solid Mining Waste document. An archived version of the first training will be available on the CLU-IN site.
