IMPC returns to US shores; Mineral-processing congress was last in US in 1995

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc. (SME) is delighted to welcome back the International Mineral Processing Congress (IMPC) to the United States of America after a hiatus of 29 years. The congress will take place adjacent to the nation’s capital, Washington, DC at the Gaylord National Resort and Conference Center Sept. 29-Oct. 4, 2024. The congress brings together the mineral processing community from around the world, including specialists from academia, research organizations and institutions, mining and metals companies, government agencies, and nonprofit entities and institutions with the common goal of advancing the understanding and practices of mineral processing. The IMPC was established in 1952 and international congresses have been held every two to three years since that time at locations selected by the 18-member International Mineral Processing Council. The last time the congress was held in the United States was in 1995 in San Francisco, CA, chaired by John A. Herbst. Since that time, the congress has been held in Africa twice; Asia and Europe three times each, and once in Australasia, North America and South America. The IMPC has also periodically established commissions consisting of council members and members at large to provide attention and advance the understanding of issues of special importance in mineral processing. Such commissions have included the Education Commission, Sustainability Commission and Commission on Industry/Academic Research. Exciting technical program The theme of the XXXI IMPC 2024 is “Mineral Processing for the Energy Transition.” The organizing committee has worked hard to develop an exciting and engaging program for the upcoming congress, including the following components: A high-quality technical program, covering highly relevant mineral processing topics: Comminution. Flotation. Dry processing. Process plant design. Energy minerals. Strategic minerals. Physical separations. Extractive metallurgy. Human capital. Water management. Innovation in mineral processing. Geometallurgy & process mineralogy. Tailings. Process control & simulation. A plenary session on opening day aligned with the congress theme. 14 keynote presentations by highly respected representatives of industry and academia. 430 peer-reviewed technical papers with presentations to be held in nine parallel streams. Published (electronic delivery) proceedings available to all registrants. Poster session in the Exhibit Hall. A mineral processing-focused exhibits area. In addition, several optional professional development activities are offered at a nominal cost to participants: Four optional short courses on Sept. 29 covering topics related to Fundamentals of Mineral and Metallurgical Processing; Geometallurgy; Innovations in Gold Processing; and Battery Materials. These provide excellent opportunities for attendees to make the most out of their time and travel to participate in the congress. An optional field trip to the innovative Luck Stone Quarry and Aggregate Processing facilities in nearby Virginia on Oct. 5. In addition to the technical program, the congress incorporates a number of social events including a welcome reception on Sept. 30 in the exhibits area; a cultural evening celebration on Oct. 1; and an awards banquet on Oct. 2. The cultural evening will feature tastes and sounds from around the United States. The awards banquet will introduce the recipients of the 2024 IMPC Lifetime Achievement Award and the Distinguished Service Award, as well as recognize the award recipients from the 2020/2021 IMPC in South Africa that was impacted by the COVID pandemic. All of the technical and social events will be held at the palatial Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center, making it a convenient rendezvous for all attendees. All of the social events are included in the congress registration fee. The Gaylord National is located on the waterfront in National Harbor, MD, just a short taxi ride from Washington, DC, the Washington Mall and all of the major tourist attractions that this location provides, such as the Washington Monument, the U.S. Capitol Building, the Library of Congress, the National Air and Space Museum, and many other museums and galleries of international fame. The Gaylord National is only a five-minute drive from the Capital Wheel and the MGM National Harbor Casino. The Gaylord is just a two minute walk from a range of restaurants and bars close to the waterfront of National Harbor, providing a myriad of options for attendees to enjoy culinary delights at their leisure.Travel to the venue is easy by air into either the Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) or Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI). The Washington, DC location provides convenient access to the Eastern Seaboard of the United States for those wishing to explore further afield. We encourage you to attend the XXXI IMPC 2024, and we look forward to seeing you all in Washington, DC/National Harbor, MD. For more information, go to https://smeimpc.org.
