Highlights from the 61st Forum on the Geology of Industrial Minerals

The 61st Forum on the Geology of Industrial Minerals (FGIM), held April 20-23 in Charlottesville, VA, reinforced its role as a premier technical meeting dedicated to the geology and practical application of industrial minerals. Supported by SME, the forum brought together geologists, engineers, regulators, academics and students for a focused exchange on resource evaluation, extraction and end-use markets. FGIM has long distinguished itself by emphasizing the connection between geologic understanding and real-world mining challenges. That focus was evident throughout the 2026 program, which combined technical rigor with applied relevance. Sessions highlighted the continued importance of industrial minerals to the U.S. economy, with total production estimated at $73.7 billion in 2025. These materials remain foundational to construction, manufacturing, energy development and emerging technologies. USGS participation The forum was further strengthened by participation from the U.S. Geological Survey, with both attendees and presenters contributing valuable insights and a broader national perspective on geologic data and resource evaluation.Several presentations explored the evolving role of industrial minerals in both traditional and advanced applications. Discussions on industrial sand and high-purity silica illustrated how materials historically associated with bulk uses are increasingly tied to high-tech industries, including silicon-based manufacturing. This convergence continues to expand the strategic importance of industrial minerals beyond their conventional markets. Resource planning in high-growth regions also emerged as a key theme. Research presented by the University of Texas at Austin Bureau of Economic Geology outlined a data-driven approach to prioritizing exploration targets based on population growth, infrastructure demand and land-use constraints. The work highlights a growing need to proactively identify and protect mineral resources in areas experiencing rapid development. The integration of emerging technologies was another focal point of the forum. Presentations demonstrated how GIS, artificial intelligence and geophysical methods are being applied to industrial mineral exploration and mine planning. As operational and regulatory environments become more complex, these advancements are playing an increasingly important role in project development and risk management. Field trips FGIM’s hallmark field trips once again provided attendees with valuable hands-on experience. These excursions allow participants to observe geologic settings, deposit characteristics and mining methods in real-world conditions, reinforcing the link between interpretation and application. Overall, the 2026 FGIM highlighted the continued evolution of the industrial minerals sector. As demand patterns shift and technologies advance, the integration of geologic insight with modern analytical tools will remain essential. Forums like FGIM play a critical role in advancing that integration, ensuring that the industry remains responsive to both current needs and future challenges.
