Fatigue management is crucial for a safe operations; Know the warning signs of fatigue

The holiday season, with all of its excitement and exhaustion, is behind us and it’s time to engage the fresh prospects and hopes of a new year. We are leaving one season that wore us out and are going into another that promises to be just as tiring. It is important that as we continue marching into the next phases of our operations, we do not forget to take care of ourselves and our miners. Fatigue is a challenge that every operation must overcome. Fatigue is more than just feeling tired — it is a serious safety hazard that can impair judgment, slow reaction times and increase the risk of accidents. In high-risk environments like mining and related industries, where employees operate large equipment and perform physically demanding tasks, fatigue can have catastrophic consequences. Managing fatigue is essential for maintaining a safe workplace and protecting the well-being of every team member. Fatigue is a state of physical and mental weariness caused by prolonged exertion, lack of sleep, or extended periods of stress. This sounds a lot like the Holiday Season we just concluded and the fresh start of a new year that we are entering. It reduces alertness and decision-making ability, making it harder to recognize hazards or respond quickly in emergencies. Studies show that being awake for 17 to 19 hours can impair performance as much as having a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05 percent. In other words, fatigue can make a person as unsafe as working under the influence. There are several risk factors that contribute to fatigue in mining and industrial operations. Long shifts and overtime and extended work rotations without adequate rest can increase fatigue. When you factor in longer commute times to many remote mining locations, the days get even longer. Night and rotating shifts can disrupt natural sleep cycles making recovery more difficult. Physically demanding tasks or repetitive monotonous tasks can drain a miner’s energy very quickly. Environmental stressors also contribute to fatigue risk. With the longer nights in the northern hemisphere along with cold, heat, noise and vibration, physical exhaustion is accelerated. Understanding these risk factors helps us design effective strategies to prevent fatigue-related incidents. The cumulative effects of these risk factors on a miner have direct impacts to the risk of safety incidents. Fatigue causes slower reaction times and poor decision-making that raises the risk of errors and shortcuts. Reduced coordination increases the risk of slips, trips or falls in an environment that already has an elevated risk with snow and ice. Microsleep events that can occur without warning, leaving miners unable to respond to the situations around them. Mining leaders, and miners themselves should watch for these fatigue warning signs. Frequent yawning or rubbing eyes is a prime indicator of fatigue. Difficulty concentrating or remembering task details is another obvious sign of fatigue. Irritability or mood changes, sluggish movements or clumsiness, or near misses and mistakes are warning signs of prolonged fatigued states. Early recognition of fatigue symptoms allows for timely intervention before it leads to incidents. Mining operations should develop a comprehensive fatigue management program that includes training, managing work schedules and commute times, enabling a fatigue-resistant culture, leveraging technology and providing miners with the resources to manage a mining lifestyle. Training the operation on the fatigue risk factors, symptoms, and basic management techniques that includes how to get better sleep, how to adjust circadian rhythms during rest days, nutrition, and how to respond when symptoms are recognized are all essential elements of the training. Fatigue-resistant cultures begin with supervisors effectively executing their responsibilities by monitoring fatigue, adjusting and reassigning work when necessary, and encouraging miners to speak up when they are not fit for duty. Comprehensive fatigue management programs should evaluate the use of technology such as video fatigue or biometric monitoring. Making wellness and mental health resources available to miners through benefit programs will round out a comprehensive fatigue management program. Managing fatigue is not an easy challenge to overcome and it takes everyone to be involved for operations to be successful. As we start a new year, some key takeaways to remember for a safe and successful year are that fatigue is a serious safety hazard, not just a personal inconvenience. We need to recognize the signs of fatigue early and take proactive steps to prevent incidents. Miners need to prioritize sleep, hydration, proper nutrition and balanced schedules. Miners need to feel comfortable speaking up to report fatigue concerns and support a culture of safety. A call to action for 2026, I encourage every reader to consider what actions you can take at your operation to reduce the likelihood of a fatigue related safety incident.
