Environmental Division’s ADTI Committee promotes understanding of acid drainage technologies

The Acid Drainage Technology Initiative (ADTI) Metal Mining Sector Committee of the SME Environmental Division focuses on the technical aspects of managing mine wastes and related materials to minimize acid rock drainage and metal leaching (ARD/ML). The mission of ADTI is to identify, evaluate, develop and disseminate information about cost-effective, environmentally sound methods and technologies to manage mine wastes and related metallurgical materials for abandoned, inactive, active and future mines and associated operations and to promote understanding of these technologies. ADTI is one of the regional organization partners of the International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP), the global umbrella organization for the development and propagation of best practices for mine waste characterization and management. To learn more about ADTI, keep an eye out for our updated page on the SME website, coming later this year. Publications have been an important piece in fulfilling ADTI’s mission. ADTI produced the six-volume series on Management Technologies for Metal Mining Influenced Water, available through the SME Store at https://store.smenet.org/#=. A new book on biogeochemistry is in the planning stages. To preserve earlier ARD-related work, including valuable case studies, ADTI members are endeavoring to compile the proceedings from the 5th International Conference on Acid Rock Drainage (ICARD), hosted by SME in 2000, in a digital format. Each year, ADTI hosts at least one technical session within the Environmental Division programming at the MINEXCHANGE SME Annual Conference & Expo. In 2025, the planned session topic is “Critical minerals in mine waste.” Presentations in this session will cover how impacts from mine waste may be reduced by treating mining byproducts as future resources, with a focus on recovery of critical minerals. Abstracts from any field are welcome and can be submitted through the SME MINEXCHANGE conference website at https://smeannualconference.org/. ADTI also holds monthly calls to discuss topics and opportunities related to mine drainage management. Recently, discussions resulted in committee members, led by Patrick Williamson, assisting Colombia’s National Authority of Environmental Licenses (ANLA) in reviewing existing and proposed policies for environmental baseline studies.
