Engage! Explore! —Discover SME Strategic Committees

Authored by: Genevieve Homyack

Engage. If you are a science fiction fan, you might hear a distinctive voice in your head when you read that word. And while we are not setting a course for deep space, there’s something quietly powerful happening right here at SME—something driven by the curiosity, commitment, and collaboration of our members.

SME’s Strategic Committees are where the Society’s strategic plan takes shape — through real conversations, shared ideas, and steady, meaningful work. These groups are made up of volunteers who care deeply about SME and the people it serves. They contribute their time and experience not out of obligation, but out of genuine commitment. Each committee includes six members serving three-year terms, supported by a chair, staff representative, and board liaison. New members are selected during the SME Midyear Meeting, with chairs beginning their terms after MINEXCHANGE 2026. It’s a steady kind of contribution — grounded in generosity, mutual respect, and a shared belief in what SME members can build together.

If you have ever wondered how SME’s strategic plan moves from paper to practice, committee meetings are a great place to start. You do not need to be a member of a committee to attend. You do not need to speak up or prepare anything. Just come as you are. Sit in, listen, ask questions if something sparks your interest. It’s a welcoming space, and you will find yourself among people who are generous with their time and eager to share what they’re working on.

At the recent Midyear Meeting, all four Strategic Committees gathered to share updates with the SME Board of Directors. The conversations were thoughtful, honest, and full of energy. The Association Growth Committee is looking closely at how SME connects with its members — especially those who might not see themselves reflected in the current structure. They’re thinking about how to make virtual engagement more meaningful and how to support students as they move into their careers. It’s inspiring to see how much care goes into making sure everyone feels welcome and valued.

The Industry Innovation Committee is diving into topics that are shaping the future of our field — cybersecurity, ethics, automation and more. They are not just identifying gaps; they’re building bridges. Their work is grounded in data, but it’s driven by a desire to help people connect and learn from each other. Their collaboration with the new Automation and Robotics Committee is a great example of how SME members work together to keep things moving forward.

The Industry Workforce Committee is focused on people — how we bring them into the industry, how we support them, and how we help them grow. They’re building on successful models like the Emily Griffith pilot and exploring international programs that might work here. They’re also mapping out SME’s existing workforce efforts to create a more connected and thoughtful strategy. It’s clear that this committee sees people not just as workers, but as individuals with potential and purpose.

The Responsible Mining and Underground Construction Committee is taking on the challenge of how mining is perceived — especially by younger generations. They’re asking hard questions about what “responsibility” really means and working to redefine it in ways that include environmental care, cultural respect, and transparency. Their work on permitting and technical gaps is detailed and practical, but it’s also rooted in a deep sense of stewardship.

Just a note – Even though the nomination process is complete for this year, the meetings are open. You are welcome to attend, observe, and get a feel for what’s happening. It’s not a commitment — it’s an invitation. Think of it like a scouting mission: a chance to explore, to learn, and to connect with others who care about the same things you do. The members who serve on these committees are thoughtful, generous, and deeply committed. They’re the kind of people who make SME what it is—a community, and a Society, not just an organization.

So set your coordinates. Come to a meeting. Explore boldly.
