Bluefield State reestablishes its mining engineering technology program

In the heart of Appalachia, where coal mining has shaped communities and economies for generations, Bluefield State University (BSU) has made a landmark decision to reestablish its mining engineering technology program. This move comes at a critical juncture for both the university and the mining industry, which faces significant workforce challenges amid evolving technological demands and an aging professional demographic. The program’s revival represents an educational initiative and a strategic response to industry needs and regional economic development. Nestled in the mountains of southern West Virginia, BSU has a storied history intertwined with the region’s mining heritage. The institution’s decision to bring back this specialized program after a hiatus of several years signals a renewed commitment to serving both regional industry demands and providing career pathways for students in an area where the cyclical nature of resource extraction economies has often limited economic opportunities. “This program’s return reflects our deep understanding of this region’s needs and our commitment to preparing graduates for meaningful careers that support our local industries,” said Darrin Martin, president of Bluefield State University. “We’re bridging the gap between education and industry with a modernized curriculum that addresses today’s mining challenges while preparing for tomorrow’s innovations.” Historical context Bluefield State’s connection to mining education runs deep, with roots stretching back to the institution’s early days. Founded in 1895, the university evolved over decades to become a key educational provider, serving the educational needs of the region’s diverse population. Mining engineering technology emerged as a natural program for the institution given the economic landscape of Appalachia.The original mining engineering technology program enjoyed decades of success, producing graduates who filled crucial roles throughout the mining industry in West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky and beyond. Alumni from the program have gone on to distinguished careers as mine managers, safety directors, C-suite executives, government regulators and entrepreneurs in mining-related businesses. Jack Richardson, chief operating officer at Warrior Metallurgic and BSU alumnus, recalls the program’s significance. “For decades, our mining engineering graduates were in high demand. Every single graduate had multiple job offers, often with starting salaries well above the regional average. These weren’t just jobs — they were career paths that allowed our students to stay in the region and contribute to their communities,” he said. The program’s discontinuation in 2016 came amid a perfect storm of challenges: declining coal production, university budget constraints and shifting educational priorities. Many regional stakeholders viewed the closure as emblematic of broader challenges facing Appalachia’s traditional industries. The changing landscape of mining The germ of the idea to reestablish the program began three years ago when a member of Bluefield State’s board of governors and a local coal executive were having dinner together. After bemoaning the need for trained engineers and the high regard for BSU alumni in that industry, the two decided to begin the effort to revive the program. Hosting an annual scholarship dinner provided the opportunity for university officials to forge relationships with industry leaders and supporters as well as celebrate the history of the program by introducing the Bluefield State University Mining and Engineering Hall of Fame. “As a graduate of Bluefield State, I was prepared to bring value to the companies and communities I worked for and in, both in engineering and management,” said Richardson, who was inducted into the BSU Engineering Hall of Fame in 2022. “My foundation of over 40 years in the industry was laid at Bluefield State, (with its) family atmosphere and dedicated faculty.” The degree program was approved late last spring, and university officials immediately began visiting area high schools and vocational and technical schools. Armed with scholarships and internships from coal companies, manufacturers, foundations and individuals, the first class of future engineers has been assembled. The mining engineering technology program has been explicitly designed to address what industry leaders describe as a widening skills gap in the mining sector. A 2023 survey by the National Mining Association found that 78 percent of mining companies reported difficulty filling technical positions, with particular shortages in the areas of automation specialists, environmental compliance officers and operations supervisors. “There are 14 accredited mining and mineral engineering degree programs across the country producing approximately 150 graduates, while there is an industry need for more than 500 engineers each year,” said Martin. “Moreover, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that 27 percent of the current geoscience workforce will be retiring by 2029, creating the need for 130,000 fully trained workers to fill that gap.” In addition to financial support, the industry is providing onsite laboratory space, paid summer internships, and adjunct professors with expertise in certain areas. “It’s important that our students enter the workforce with real-world experience beyond the classroom,” said Martin. The four-year program culminates with a bachelor of science degree and offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip students with the technical skills and the knowledge to thrive in the modern mining industry. Courses include mine ventilation, planning, safety management, mineral processing, and mine leadership and organization. Students will benefit from hands-on training, state-of-the-art facilities and partnerships with industry leaders. Critical minerals and mining renaissance The mining sector is experiencing renewed attention due to critical minerals essential for renewable energy technologies, electronics and defense applications. “What we’re seeing isn’t just a continuation of traditional mining, it’s a transformation,” said Cary Harwood, professor and interim director of the revived program. “From lithium and cobalt for electric-vehicle batteries to rare earth elements for electronics and defense applications, mining expertise is more vital than ever for national security and energy transition.” The program’s revival aligns with federal initiatives to secure domestic sources of critical minerals, reducing reliance on foreign imports. By training a new generation of mining engineers, Bluefield State supports the development of sustainable supply chains for materials vital to clean energy technologies, electronics and defense applications. Through its mining engineering technology program, BSU not only addresses the technical challenges of critical mineral extraction but also fosters economic growth and workforce development in the Appalachian region. The program’s emphasis on practical experience and industry collaboration ensures that graduates are well prepared to meet the demands of this crucial field. Industry partnership model Perhaps the most distinctive aspect of the revived program is its deep integration with industry partners. The program has secured commitments from several leading mining companies and manufacturers to provide paid internships, equipment donations and guest lecturers. “We’ve adopted what we call a ‘classroom to coal face’ approach,” Harwood explained. “Students will spend significant time in actual mining operations, learning from experienced professionals. This isn’t just about theory — it’s about practical application in real-world settings.” Bluefield State’s program aims to produce precisely this type of versatile graduate through its integrated approach to education. The curriculum balances traditional mining engineering fundamentals with emerging technological applications. “Our graduates will understand both the physical realities of mining operations and the digital systems that increasingly control them,” explained Harwood. “They’ll be comfortable both underground and in a control room.” Meeting demand with diversity Despite being recently reintroduced, Bluefield State’s mining engineering technology program is drawing strong interest. The inaugural class includes nearly a dozen students from across the region — reflecting shifting perceptions of what mining careers look like today. Landon Johnson, a first-year student, is already applying what he’s learned at BSU through his job with West River Conveyors in Oakwood, VA. “In school, I’ve gained hands-on experience and met many professionals who’ve shared their knowledge — covering everything from conveyors and shafts to safety and mine design,” he said, and these experiences have provided technical skills and valuable industry connections. “I’d love to work for a mining company and work my way up to a corporate position. With this degree, I can stay close to home and support my family.” He has also noticed a broader impact, saying, “What I’ve learned at BSU helps me solve problems every day — even around the house.” Harmon Hunter is interning with Appalachian Aggregates and sees daily how classroom lessons translate to the field. “I use what I’ve learned, like how to scale high walls and complete safety documentation, every single day,” he said. “Industry leaders have shown us their machines and operations, which gives us a deeper understanding.” For Hunter, mining runs in the family. “I’ve always thought about this career, and I’m so glad Bluefield State brought the program back. It’s given me the knowledge and real-world experience I need to succeed,” he said. His advice to others: “If you’re thinking about mining, join and see for yourself.”Jaxon Williams shared a similar story of transformation. “My time at BSU has been eye-opening. I wasn’t the most mature student coming in, but being surrounded by great people has changed me. I’ve learned time management, how to deal with setbacks, and how to stay motivated,” he said. Williams is now a permit technician for an engineering company, where he designs mine sites and conducts field visits for certifications. “It’s a mix of office and field work, which I love, and I’ve learned so much from my coworkers. I started as an intern and became full-time because of what I learned at BSU and the connections I made,” he added. Looking ahead, Williams is energized by the future of mining. He noted, “There’s so much cutting-edge technology coming to the industry, and I want to be part of a company that’s improving the world.”Mining is highly technical and full of variety, and the job market is hungry for engineers who can think outside the box, Williams observed. This is especially true in West Virginia, where the work carries a deep sense of purpose. “Take pride in what you do,” he said. “Mining is the backbone of our state, and people are counting on us to pave the way forward.” Dreston Hawthorne is focused on education and entrepreneurship. “Bluefield State has helped me concentrate on my dreams and goals,” he said. “I’m working on a couple of inventions that I believe will help people in the future.” Hawthorne emphasizes intentional living. “I hate distractions. Life isn’t forever, so I want to make my time count,” he said. Supported by multiple income streams, he has chosen to focus entirely on school rather than work. All four students offered thoughtful advice for others considering mining. Johnson highlighted the workforce gap, saying, “Tens of thousands of mining engineers are set to retire in the coming years. This is a niche field with tremendous opportunity, unlike oversaturated areas like civil engineering.” Hawthorne stressed the importance of specialization, saying, “Know what area of mining interests you, coal, gold, gems, etc.” BSU’s program has returned at a critical time, responding to industry demand, technological change and a retiring workforce. As Johnson put it, success comes down to “finding something that interests you and provides for you and your family” — a balance that Bluefield State’s mining engineering technology program is helping its students achieve. Beyond coal While coal mining remains significant in the region, Bluefield State’s program is deliberately forward-looking in its approach. The curriculum emphasizes transferable skills applicable across mining sectors and includes specific attention to critical minerals essential for renewable energy and advanced technologies. “We’re preparing students for the mining industry of 2030 and beyond, not just today’s operations,” said Harwood. “That means understanding everything from lithium extraction for batteries to rare earth processing for electronics.” The program is also establishing research partnerships focused on sustainable mining practices, including a collaboration with Virginia Tech to promote regional economic growth and accelerate the characterization of critical minerals in the Appalachian Mountain region. These initiatives reflect a broader vision of mining education that acknowledges both the industry’s traditional importance and its evolving role in a transitioning energy landscape. A model for specialized technical education As Bluefield State University ushers the first cohort of students to its revived mining engineering technology program, the initiative represents more than just the return of a traditional academic offering. It embodies a thoughtful response to complex regional challenges, bridging educational objectives with economic development needs while acknowledging the technological transformation reshaping the mining industry. The program’s emphasis on industry partnership, technological currency and environmental responsibility offers a potential model for specialized technical education in other fields facing similar workforce challenges. By deeply engaging with industry needs while maintaining academic rigor, BSU has created a program that serves multiple stakeholders: students seeking meaningful careers, companies requiring skilled professionals, and a region navigating economic transition. “What we’re doing here isn’t just about mining education,” said Martin. “It’s about responsive higher education that directly addresses community needs. It’s about creating opportunities that allow our graduates to build meaningful careers while staying connected to this region. And ultimately, it’s about ensuring that as the mining industry evolves, our graduates will be leading that evolution.” As the first students begin their journey through this revitalized program, both the university and the mining industry will be watching closely to see if this innovative approach delivers on its promise: producing graduates uniquely qualified to bridge mining’s past with its technologically advanced and environmentally conscious future.
