Anatomy of excellence: What makes an IM&A Division award winner?

The energy from the MINEXCHANGE 2026 SME Annual Conference & Expo held Feb. 22–26 in Salt Lake City, UT, continues to resonate throughout our division. However, as we transition from the technical sessions and networking events, our focus shifts to the individuals who make such progress possible. The Industrial Minerals & Aggregates (IM&A) Division awards are not merely annual traditions; they are a recognition of the specific traits, the “anatomy of excellence” that drive the industrial minerals and aggregates sector forward. A premier example of this divisional excellence is our most recent 2026 Hal Williams Hardinge Award recipient, Rajesh Raitani. With a career spanning more than two decades and currently focused on global business strategies at Nalco Water, an Ecolab Co., Raitani was honored for his outstanding achievements and exceptional dedication to the field of mining chemicals. His deep expertise in surface chemistry and mineral processing has led to significant advancements, especially in the industrial, critical and fertilizer mineral segments. Raitani’s career path serves as a roadmap for our division. He is a past recipient of several awards including the Outstanding Young Scientist Award and A. Frank Alsobrook Distinguished Service Award. He has been an SME member since 2007 and has also served as IM&A Division Chair in the past. His divisional honors underscore the value of sustained engagement within the SME community. The awards nomination window opened on April 1 and will run through June 1. We encourage you to identify colleagues who embody the traits of our three core honors: • A. Frank Alsobrook Distinguished Service Award: We seek the “core pillar” of our community — members who have significantly advanced the IM&A Division through sustained committee leadership and mentorship.• Hal Williams Hardinge Award: This honor recognizes the pioneers whose research, education or innovation has expanded markets and fundamentally advanced knowledge in industrial minerals and aggregates.• Young Scientist Award: We aim to highlight rising stars under the age of 40 who are shaping the future through excellence in R&D, sustainability or process optimization. Winners will receive a one-year SME membership and the opportunity to be featured in Mining Engineering magazine. Do not let world-class contributions go unnoticed.
