Waste oil used with ANFO for blasting

Mining Engineering , 2001, Vol. 53, No. 10, pp. 18-18

PREVIEW:
Shell’s fuel and lubricant engineers have developed an environmentally friendly and cost effective way to dispose of waste oil in. The engineers found that waste oil can be blended with ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) and then be used in blasting. Shell has applied the process at Rio Tinto’s Hamersley Iron Mine sites in Western Australia. It is predicted that using this blending technology can save Hamersley up to A$250,000 in the coming months. Increasing emphasis on environmental compliance prompted Shell to research new methods of waste management and disposal at Hamersley.
