The search for precious metals opened up the American West. And Nevada was right in the heart of this development. In the mid-19th century, prospectors seeking gold roamed the hills of Nevada and discovered the Comstock Lode. The development of this huge silver and gold deposit began in 1859 and was responsible for Nevada’s early entry to statehood. Mining was Nevada’s first industry.
