PREVIEW:
During the preliminary design stages of the Illinois Division of Natural Resources (DNR) building, it was discovered that an old coal mine was present some 70 m (220 ft) beneath the building site. The new DNR building to be constructed is 36 m (120 ft) wide and 134 m (440 ft) long. It has three stories above grade and a basement level. The building is oriented north-south and has east and west ponds next to it (Fig. 1). The building is located on the State Fairgrounds in Springfield, IL.
