PREVIEW:
Northern Chile’s Atacama Desert holds several major deposits of caliche, natural Chilean saltpeter. These near-surface deposits are under a 200-mm-(8-in.-) deep rock bed. This highgrade salt is used by the chemical industry as a basic material. The deposit is rich in nitrogen and also contains high percentages of iodine and boron.
