The national bulk power network, or what some would call the electricity grid, is not a grid but is instead composed of three electrically separate systems. These include the Eastern Interconnection, the Western Interconnection and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). The system has to be in balance; generation and usage have to be exactly equal at all times within each of the systems or interconnections.
