PREVIEW:

Coal production and coal use for electric power generation are diminishing worldwide. Germany will phase out lignite mining as well as lignite and hard coal-powered electricity generation by 2038. In the United States, coal production has dropped by more than 50 percent since 2006, including in key coal production states like West Virginia and Wyoming (EIA, 2021).
