ABSTRACT:
The remote-sealing process described in this paper was developed at the West Elk Mine, which is owned and operated by Mountain Coal Co. (MCC), a subsidiary of Arch Coal Inc. This underground longwall operation is located in Gunnison County, Colorado, near the town of Somerset. The mine maintains a work force of approximately 300 employees. In 1999, approximately 6.4 Mt (7 million st) of coal were produced from this operation.
