ABSTRACT:
Fifteen years ago, few in the mining industry had heard the words sustainable development, let alone knew what it meant. Today, it is a different story.
Industry leaders have embraced the concept. They have taken action to incorporate the inherent values and principles of sustainable development into the policies and modus operandi of their companies. Sustainable development had its origins in the ground-breaking report entitled Our Common Future by the World Commission on Environment and Development in 1987 (commonly referred to as the Brundtland Report).
