ABSTRACT:
The production of most minerals requires beneficiation of the mineral-bearing ore, with the consequent generation of a barren component or tailings. Because grinding and water-based separation are often required for concentration, the tailings are often in the form of a thickener-underflow water slurry. Such slurries typically have solids contents in the 25% to 75% (by weight) range before dilution. Disposal of the tailings in an environmentally acceptable manner has become a challenge to mineral producers.
