ABSTRACT:
The safe disposal of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste is a pressing issue now facing the US Department of Energy (DOE), the nuclear power industry, federal, state and local regulators, and society as a whole. The Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982, as amended, requires that the DOE undertake site-characterization activities at Yucca Mountain, NV. Site characterization is providing information and the data required to evaluate a proposed action to construct, operate, monitor and eventually close a geologic repository containing spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste (DOE, 1998).
