ABSTRACT:
The Morenci mining district is located in southeastern Arizona as shown in Fig. 1. The district hosts the largest producing porphyry copper deposit in North America. The mining complex is owned and operated by Phelps Dodge Mining. It consists of the Metcalf, Northwest Extension, and Coronado and Garfield openpits; and the world’s largest solvent extraction/electrowinning facility (SX/EW). In 2000, the Morenci mining district produced more than 453 kt (1 billion lb) of copper.
