Automated guidance systems for underground machines: Can they benefit my future project?

Mining Engineering , 2000, Vol. 52, No. 12, pp. 46-50
Hollinshead, W.L.

In the last centuries, the greatest cost savings in mining and tunneling have been achieved through the use of tunnel boring machines (TBM) and mining machines. Additionally, this equipment has achieved a higher degree of safety for the workers and a much higher rate of boring advance and production. To keep up with these achievements, it is necessary to maintain the position of these machines to within a small specification of the design centerline. To fulfill this requirement, a new generation of machine guidance systems has been developed and is now available worldwide.
