The Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) specifications B105.1 “Welded Steel Conveyor Pulleys” (CEMA, 2003) and 501.1 “Welded Steel Wing Pulleys” (CEMA, 2003) adequately define standard pulleys for most aggregate material-handling applications. However, many aggregate applications demand pulleys of higher capacity and reliability than that offered by CEMA pulleys. This paper examines the CEMA pulley standards and pulley specifications for aggregate applications that require greater capacity and reliability. Higher reliability increases the uptime and has a lower total cost of ownership. Conveyor pulley assemblies for the wide range of conveyor applications for aggregates can generally be divided into three broad classes: CEMA standard pulleys, Mine Duty pulleys and Engineered pulleys. This paper reviews the three classes of pulleys and how they are used.
