A review of copper and nickel extraction from wastewater by emulsion liquid membrane (ELM)

Ma, Hao; Waters, Kristian E.; Wang, Haibei

ABSTRACT:

In the last few decades, emulsion liquid membrane (ELM)-based separation processes have become attractive and efficient ways to remove toxic metal ions from a variety of aqueous waste effluent streams. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the generation, characterization and applications of these membranes. Their formation and transport mechanism are first introduced, followed by the latest research and findings on the extraction of copper and nickel using ELM techniques, including a thorough discussion of the operating parameters that have an impact on ELM stability and extraction.
