Construction of the San Francisco Bay Tunnel

Mining Engineering, 2014, Vol. 66, No. 12, pp. 156-158
Caulfied, R. John; Whitman, Ed; Stevens, Jim; Fleming, Kit; Wong, Johanna I.

PREVIEW:

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) manages a large water supply system of reservoirs, tunnels, pipelines and treatment systems that stretches about 320 km (200 miles) from the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in Yosemite National Park to the San Francisco Bay Area (Fig 1).

The SFPUC serves 2.4 million residential, commercial and industrial customers. In November 2002, the SFPUC launched a $4.6-billion water system improvement program (WSIP) to repair, replace and seismically upgrade the aging 1920s era infrastructure.
